Teachers are an integral part of the program, from pre-trip anticipation-building in the classroom and phone calls with anxious parents to weaving school goals into curricular instruction while teaching on the trail. Over the years we have noticed that high levels of teacher participation at High Trails directly correlates to a much richer educational experience for students! High Trails instructors look forward to collaborating with and learning from experienced classroom teachers, and look to teachers for support and advice. Your presence and participation throughout the school’s visit not only ensures a smooth trip, but also provides the opportunity to get to know students in a new setting, to watch as students thrive outside of the classroom, and to build community in the cabin, during meals, and during Discovery Groups.
Throughout the week, teachers have a variety of responsibilities including cabin management, teaching on the trail, evaluating students in the High School leadership program, communicating with the directors and nursing staff, and helping students who need a little extra attention. High Trails directors will visit school a few months before your trip to discuss logistics, plan curriculum and more thoroughly discuss the roles and responsibilities that lead to a successful trip.

"I've told many of the staff at High Trails this while I was there, but I have to say it again. I have been to and worked at 7 summer camps since 1995. This is one of the best organized, most friendly camps I have worked at. The food was excellent. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The training provided for the high-schoolers was excellent. And best of all, there was just the right balance between structure and freedom. The students could explore themselves and their surroundings both on their own and as a group. Well done!"
“You have an exceptional camp that is run well, the counselors are fantastic and involved, facilities are great, and there lots of learning opportunities. See you next year!”
“I love that learning atmosphere of your camp. It is so well organized and positive, it is a joy to bring students.”
“We really appreciate all you do up at High Trails. Our school keeps getting bigger and bigger and your staff adapts and engages the kids tremendously well. I know our students will be talking about this trip for a long time.”
"I was so impressed with the increased instruction and educational programming accomplished during the Discovery Groups this year!! Your staff were excellent teachers and imparted detailed lessons on Geology, History, Social Studies and more. Plus, they did it with an amazing amount of humor and enthusiasm!! Wow! Impressive!! Kudos to the team that wrote the curriculum, as well! Very engaging!! :) When I asked the 6th graders, "On a scale of 1-10, how did you like camp?" their response was 10+ , with some saying "infinity!!" :)"
