Food and Dietary Concerns

At the Meal

Meals are a favorite time of the day, and students build community by passing and sharing food politely, enjoying each other’s company, and dining as a cabin group.  In addition, each cabin group spends one meal eating early, and then serving the rest of the full group.  The responsibility and work required to help with a meal provides a good learning experience for students, and creates great memories too.

My student has a severe peanut allergy?  Can they participate?

We see students with peanut allergies almost every week.  Peanut products are not served in the lodge, so there is no cross-contamination.  We are also aware of foods that are produced in the same factories as peanut-based products and take care not to use these in the kitchen.  Students will carry their own epi-pen (if allergy/medical paperwork requires), and teachers and HTOEC staff are trained in how to use it.

Students with dairy allergies, gluten-free diets and other restrictions are encouraged to pack their own food in a cooler which we will keep cold during the week.

Please call if you have any concerns.

Three full meals are provided daily, and the food is great!  Students eat with their cabin groups, food is served family-style, and vegetarian options are available at every meal.  We provide a well-rounded diet, with plenty of vegetables for lunch and dinner.  In addition, fruit is available at any time.  Our cooks are happy to work with students with allergies and other dietary needs, and love providing tasty, healthy food to keep students going throughout the day.
