It's now May (crazy!) and Spring is officially arriving here at High Trails. We've been noticing signs of warmer weather here - hummingbirds, longer days, and budding Aspens - and now we are enjoying a great final week of the Spring season. Many of the Aspens are in full neon-green splendor, and it's almost time to fly the tents at Big Spring. To get yourself into the season, spend some time enjoying the great outdoor weather, and check out these five great Springtime activities for students and adults!
Here's another article on innovative education - this one about the study of how we learn, and how it is applied to the learning process for children. Summit County Elementary Schools are here! Although we did get some snow yesterday (much needed), the weather has been beautiful today, and it is great to have kids back on property for the first time in 2012. We have a packed house - 233 4th graders, 38 high school counselors, and 22 teachers.
We are getting ready to kick of the Spring HTOEC season. Yesterday, we began training our Spring Staff, who have arrived from many parts of the country - some as far away as New York! It's great to have good folks around again, and everyone is really excited to learn about teaching and leading in the outdoors. We have a mix of veterans and new teachers that will bring fresh insights and knowledge to the program, and we're all excited to get to teach together this Spring.

Active video games are not the same as the real thing - just another arguement to get outside and play!

This weekend, the new Post - Parks program was pioneered, and was great. This is an initiative powered by the National Parks to encourage military families posted at different bases around the country connected to the National Parks they live near. Jeff Wollin, a Ranger at the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, wrote and received a grant to bring the Post - Parks program to HTOEC.
Today we had a blast! About 70 high school leaders, nominated by their school's High Trails Coordinator, arrived here around 8 this morning. These students will be coming back throughout this fall, and serving with the other high school leaders throughout the season. This was our chance to help them build their leadership skills, expand their comfort zone, and have a great day.
